"Is Money the Measure of Success? - Scholarship Essay Contest

"Is Money the Measure of Success? - Scholarship Essay Contest

Mercer Partners Wealth Management awarded two deserving high school seniors $1,000 college scholarships.  We posed the question “Is Money the Measure of Success?” Out of 26 entries received from 7 different East Bay high schools, two stood out among the best.

Sarah Son, a graduate of Northgate High School, will be attending UCLA to study economics this fall. She wrote a powerful essay on poverty and how the lack of wealth affects the happiness of those without. She concludes her essay by saying “What the possession of money can guarantee indefinitely security and possibility; it gives you the choice to use…currency to create real change in yourself, in your community, in your country, in the world, if that’s what you choose to do with it.”

Oscar Loyd of Acalanes High School, who will attend the University of Nevada at Reno and plans to study medicine, discussed how education determines success and how often the price of it can change ones path. Despite getting in to every college he applied to, he was challenged to “select the one offering the best balance of academic reputation and affordability” in order to achieve success and avoid tremendous student debt.

Every student who entered the competition received the book “The Wealthy Barber” by David Chilton to help in planning for their financial future.
